dahood holds that "coals of fire" is a metaphor for "pains, afflictions" and that the meaning of the text would then be, "by feeding your hungry enemy and giving him to drink, you will remove a serious affliction from his head," (william klassen, "coals of fire", in new testament studies, 9, page 342).
