the hollow interior often is nearly filled with inward-projecting crystals, new layers growing on top of old. the crystals are of quartz, less often of calcite or dolomite, and sometimes of aragonite, ankerite, hematite, magnetite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, and sphalerite.
