as mcgee mentioned, ripe tomatoes are best stored around 55degf. at that temperature, ripe tomatoes will be held in stasis, neither ripening or becoming damaged by cold. alas, most refrigerators are cooled to around 35degf to 38degf. that's a solid 20degf under the happy temperature of a ripe tomato.
