1. combine the sour cream, sauerkraut, onion (if using) and garlic.
2. spread mixture onto bottom of 9x13-inch pan.
3. scatter corned beef evenly over mixture.
4. spread cheese on top of corned beef.
5. put bread on top of the swiss cheese.
6. pour butter on top of bread.
7. bake at 350degf for 1/2 hour.
